Course Description

This lecture will explore the functionality of canine dentition. There will be a brief review of the canine dental anatomy followed by a discussion of the functions of each type of tooth. Comparisons to the human dental anatomy and a discussion the hurdles pet owners have with inappropriately comparing their dental function to that of their dogs’ will be addressed. The common indications for dental extractions will be outlined followed by a discussion of the common causes of dentoalveolar trauma. Finally, time will be given to a presentation of options for avoiding dental extractions. Knowing what should be referred to a specialist and when to refer is of great importance in a time of informed consent. This presentation is image heavy with lots of time for questions, debate, and discussions.
